Hope Karnes, MD, PhD

Hope Karnes, MD, PhD is a physician leader, dedicated to promoting, expanding, and transforming the laboratory’s vital role in clinical medicine. She currently serves as Medical Director of Clinical Solutions, within Medical Affairs, where she participates in cross-functional strategic initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.

Dr Karnes received a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in Biomedical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004. She went on to complete her MD and PhD from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2009 and 2011, respectively. From 2011 to 2016, Dr Karnes completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology, as well as a fellowship in blood banking and transfusion medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. During her tenure there, she served as Chief Resident of Laboratory and Genomics Medicine and was named Fellow Teacher of the Year by her peers in 2016.

Prior to joining Quest Diagnostics in 2018, Dr Karnes worked as a general pathologist providing surgical, cytologic, clinical, and autopsy pathology services, as well as medical laboratory directorship oversight, in both the private and governmental sectors. She has broad experience within laboratory medicine and particularly enjoys working across teams to improve communications among pathologists, clinicians, and laboratorians. Dr Karnes is a recognized author and speaker. She was named a “40 Under Forty” selectee for laboratory leadership by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in 2016.

Dr Karnes is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine by the American Board of Pathology.
