National Science Director, Microbiology and Donor Testing

About

Dr Shier is the national science director of microbiology and donor testing at Quest Diagnostics and chair of the Quest Diagnostics Microbiology Best Practice Team. Prior to joining Quest in 2013, she was the Director of Microbiology at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. After earning her PhD, Dr Shier completed a 2-year American Society for Microbiology (ASM) CPEP fellowship in Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology both at UCLA. She holds multiple certifications and is licensed in California and New York. Dr Shier is an active contributor in the field and serves as an editor for the ASM journal Microbiology Spectrum. She is currently a member of the ASM Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine Practice Guidelines Subcommittee, the CAP Standards Committee, and the CLSI M68 Document Design Committee. She is the current president of the Washington, DC regional branch of ASM. Her research focuses on new technologies for implementation in the clinical microbiology laboratory, with emphasis on artificial intelligence and digital microbiology.
