How it works

Step 1: Purchase

 

♦ A patient purchases Genetic Insights online at Quest (questhealth.com). 

 

♦ A saliva collection kit is mailed to the patient. 

 

♦ Upon receipt of the kit, the patient logs into their secure Quest account and answers questions about their personal and family health history to activate their test. 

 

♦ The test request is generated.

Step 2: Eligibility determination

 

♦ The test request, which includes the patient's self-reported health history, is submitted confidentially to PWN and evaluated for eligibility. 

 

♦ If a patient is eligible, a board-certified physician submits a test order to the Quest Diagnostics CLIA-certified lab. 

 

♦ If a patient is not eligible, they’re notified and given a refund.*

Step 3: Lab testing

 

♦ The patient self-collects a saliva sample and mails it to the Quest Diagnostics CLIA-certified lab where the test is performed. 

 

♦ A board-certified lab director then reviews and signs off on the test results and releases the lab report to PWN and the patient.

 

Step 4: Results review

 

♦ A PWN network provider reviews the lab report and genetic counselors conduct clinical outreach for certain, rare results.

Step 5: Results available

  2. The patient receives an email that their test results are available. Then, the patient logs into the secure Genetic Insights dashboard. 

Results come in a few formats:

 

♦ Digital reports for patients. Every patient receives a set of health condition reports that provide necessary information about results and key takeaways—in plain English. These report can be downloaded and printed.  

 

♦ A lab report to share with a provider. An easy-to-print lab report lists the genes tested and gives detailed descriptions of any pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants detected. It also includes a QR code that links to an online Quick Reference Guide for providers. These Quick Reference Guides provide information about how to talk with patients about test results, next steps, and clinical guidelines. 

Step 6: Next steps

 

We want everyone who takes the test to leave with clear action items.  

 

All Genetic Insights patients are: 

 

♦ Encouraged to share their test results with a provider.

 

♦ Encouraged to take advantage of online genetic counseling.

 

♦ Given lifestyle suggestions and treatment options to discuss with their provider.  

 

♦ Encouraged to confirm a positive result with additional testing, and educated about Genetic Insights being a screening test, which is different from a diagnostic test. 

 

* If an individual is under 18 years old, has received a bone marrow or stem cell transplant from a donor, or lives in a state where testing is not offered, they are automatically not eligible for Genetic Insights.
The Genetic Insights test was developed and is performed by Quest Diagnostics. The test results are not diagnostic and do not determine the overall chance of developing a disease or health condition. The tests are not cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Individuals should consult a healthcare provider before taking any action based on test results, including before making any treatment, dietary, or lifestyle changes.
